Free AI Visibility Checker: Is ChatGPT Recommending Your Business?

Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and you will almost never get the same list of brands. In a study of 2,961 AI answers, the odds of any two answers matching were under 1 in 100.

That one fact changes how an AI visibility checker should work. A single look tells you very little, and a one-off check can easily mislead you, whether it comes from a free tool or from you.

Most marketers do not measure any of this. In Goodfirms' 2026 survey of 100+ marketers, 89% said their company already appears in Google AI Overviews for its target queries. Yet only 14% track whether AI platforms actually cite them.

This guide gives you a free, do-it-yourself AI visibility checker built around repeat testing. You can get a first read in ten minutes and a solid baseline in about an hour. You need no software and no signup. You will get a prompt list, a scorecard, a way to read the results and a 30-day plan.

Quick answer: to check whether ChatGPT recommends your business, ask it the questions your customers ask. Run each question several times on each major AI platform. Then record whether your business was named, linked, and described correctly.

What Is an AI Visibility Checker?

An AI visibility checker tests whether AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews mention, cite, or recommend your business when people ask about what you sell. It measures your AI brand visibility, which means how often you show up inside answers and how accurately you are described.

Three outcomes matter:

  • A mention means the AI names your business in its answer.
  • A citation means the AI links to your website as a source.
  • A recommendation means the AI suggests you as a good choice for the question.

You can be mentioned without being cited, and cited without being recommended. A good check records all three.

People are already looking for these checks. Ahrefs data shows about 1,600 searches a month in the US for "ai visibility checker," with close variants such as "ai overview tracker" (1,200) and "chatbot visibility tracker" (1,100) right behind.

Your usual reports will not answer this question. Search Console and analytics show clicks and visits. They cannot show the times ChatGPT named a competitor, and you never got the chance.

Why One Check Is Never Enough

Here is the catch with any one-off check. AI answers change every time you ask.

In January 2026, Rand Fishkin of SparkToro and Patrick O'Donnell of Gumshoe published a study to test this. Six hundred volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI, for a combined 2,961 runs. The results were clear:

  • ChatGPT or Google's AI gave the same list of brands twice less than 1 in 100 times.
  • The chance of getting the same list in the same order was closer to 1 in 1,000.
  • Lists ranged from as few as two or three brands to ten or more.

That does not mean tracking is pointless. Fishkin concluded that how often a brand appears across many runs is a reasonable measure. A single "ranking position in AI" is not. In one example, a hospital appeared in 69 of 71 ChatGPT answers, a 97% visibility rate. It was the first name in only 25.

A better question than "Where do I rank in ChatGPT?" is "How often does ChatGPT include me?" The authors are open about the study's limits. They are not professional researchers, and they call for larger studies.

How to Check If ChatGPT Recommends Your Business

Step 1: Write Prompts the Way Customers Talk

Write 8 to 10 questions. Mix the types in the table below.

Do not stress over perfect wording. In SparkToro's follow-up test, 142 people wrote prompts for the same goal and barely two looked alike. The AI still returned a fairly steady set of brands. Varied wording is fine, and it is closer to real life.

Prompt type Example prompt What to record
Best-of What are the best [service] companies in [city]? Mentioned or not, and which competitors appear
Problem How do I [fix a problem your service solves]? Mentioned or not, and which sources are linked
Comparison [Your business] vs [competitor]: which is better for [use case]? Tone and accuracy of the details
Brand What is [your business] known for? Is it reliable? Accuracy, sentiment, and outdated information
Local Who is a trusted [service] near [neighborhood or city]? Whether address, hours, and phone are correct

Short on time? Run your five most important prompts once in ChatGPT and once in Google. That gives you a first read in about ten minutes. Do the full test below when you can.

Step 2: Run the Test the Same Way Every Time

  1. Open a fresh chat or a private window for each platform. Use the same wording each time.
  2. Test at least four platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google (AI Overviews or AI Mode). Add Claude or Copilot if your buyers use them.
  3. Run each prompt three times. Three runs are a quick snapshot, not a statistical test.
  4. Log every answer in a spreadsheet. Note the date, platform, prompt, whether you were mentioned, whether you were linked, which competitors appeared, and whether the details were right.
  5. Work out your mention rate. Divide the answers that name you by the total number of answers, then multiply by 100.

Here is an example. Eight prompts on four platforms, run three times each, give you 96 answers. That is the roughly one-hour version. If you appear in 24 of them, your mention rate is 25%.

There is no universal "good" score. Compare yourself with two or three competitors on the same prompts, then watch the trend each month.

How to Read Your Results (and What to Fix First)

Once you have numbers, match each pattern to its likely cause.

What you see What it usually means First fix
You are not named anywhere The AI has little evidence that you are a good answer for this topic Publish a direct-answer page for each missed question and earn mentions on trusted sites
You are named, but details are wrong Your business details conflict across the web Make your name, address, phone, and services identical everywhere
Competitors appear, and you do not They show up in more of the sources the AI uses Find where they are listed or reviewed, then get listed there too
You are named but never linked The AI knows your name but does not use your pages as a source Add clear answers, FAQs, and proof to the pages that should be cited
You appear on one platform only Each platform draws on different sources Check the sources that platform shows, then fill the gaps

SparkToro also saw AI tools recommend inactive accounts and offices that no longer exist. So check whether an AI names an old version of you, such as a closed location, an old brand name, or a service you dropped.

Free AI Visibility Checkers or the Manual Method?

Manual_vs_AI_Visibility_Checkers

Free AI visibility checkers are a fast place to start. Many test your brand across several AI assistants in minutes. Before you trust a score, ask four questions:

  • Which platforms does it test?
  • How many prompts does it run, and can you edit them?
  • Does it show the sources behind each answer?
  • Does it give the same result when you run it twice?

Because answers vary so much, tools that run many prompts many times give steadier numbers than a manual check. That is where paid platforms earn their keep.

The Goodfirms survey shows how thin most measurement still is. Google Search Console (70%) and third-party SEO tools (65%) dominate marketers' reporting. Only 14% track AI citations, and only 11% track branded search or share of voice. Goodfirms adds that even basic AI citation monitoring puts a business ahead of roughly 86% of competitors.

Branded search is a useful free signal. If AI answers keep naming you, that may show up as more people searching for your name. Watch it in Search Console next to your scorecard.

Google AI Overviews need a quick manual check of their own. Search your target questions in a private window. See whether an AI Overview appears, then open its source links and look for your site.

30-Day_Visibility_Roadmap

What to Do After Your First Check

You now have a baseline. Here is a simple 30-day plan.

  1. Week one: save your baseline. Keep the spreadsheet, the prompt list and the date.
  2. Week two: fix the basics. Make your business name, address, phone and services identical across your website and your listings. Complete your Google Business Profile and your main review profiles.
  3. Week three: publish answer-ready pages for the prompts where you were missing. Put a direct answer in the first two sentences and add a short FAQ. Goodfirms found that only 70% of marketers write in plain, simple language, which it says AI systems favor for citation. Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT covers the full process.
  4. Week four: run the same prompts again and compare your mention rate with your baseline.

FAQ

1. What is an AI visibility checker?

It is a tool or method that tests whether AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity mention, cite, or recommend your business for the questions your customers ask.

2. Are free AI visibility checkers accurate?

They give a useful snapshot, not exact proof. In SparkToro's study the same brand list came back fewer than 1 time in 100, so repeat your prompts and measure how often you appear, not where you rank.

3. Does an AI visibility checker work for local businesses?

Yes. Add your city or neighborhood to each prompt, then check that your address, hours and phone number are right in every answer. Local answers often draw on listings and reviews, so a complete Google Business Profile helps.

4. How do I check if my site appears in Google AI Overviews?

Search your target questions in a private window. If an AI Overview appears, open its source links and see whether your site is listed. This works as a free AI overview checker.

5. What is a good AI visibility score?

There is no universal benchmark. Compare your mention rate with a few competitors on the same prompts, then track the trend each month.

6. How often should I run an AI visibility check?

Monthly works for most businesses. Keep the same prompts and wording so you can compare results over time.
